Wear resistance
The largest application area of thermal spraying technology at high and low temperatures. Such coatings are divided into the following categories:
(1) Adhesive wear or scratch resistance - two surfaces slide relative to each other, and when debris sticks from one surface to the other, adhesive wear or scratches occur. Dedicated typical coatings are cobalt-based tungsten carbide, nickel-chromium/chromium-carbide coatings.
(2) Abrasive wear - when a harder surface slides on a softer surface and there is wear between the two surfaces, abrasive wear occurs. Abrasive wear also occurs when fibers and threads pass through the surface at high speed. Proprietary typical coatings are cobalt-based nickel-chromium alloys, self-fluxing alloys mixed with molybdenum, and chromium oxide coatings.
(3) Resistance to fretting wear - repeated loading and unloading produces cyclic stress resulting in surface cracking and large-area shedding. Dedicated typical coatings are alumina/titania coatings.
(4) Cavitation wear resistance - liquid movement produces mechanical impact on the surface. A dedicated typical coating is an aluminium bronze coating.
(5) Erosion wear resistance - when the particles carried by gas or liquid impact the surface at high speed, erosion wear occurs. Dedicated typical coatings are aluminum oxide/titanium dioxide, aluminum oxide coating, thermal spray ceramic guide wheel.
